Piedras Negras: Introduction
by Rebecca South
It is not widely known, but the Monolithic EcoShell was born out of a desire to help the people of Mexico.
In 1995, David B. South, President of the Monolithic Dome Institute, and his family and friends went on a vacation through Mexico. They took off from Italy, Texas in his Dodge Maxivan and headed South. They were to tour Laredo, Monterray, Ciudad Victoria and Tampico.
Along the way, David would continually veer off the beaten path and drive through many Colonias and Pueblos. It wasn't until the group returned to Texas that David revealed what he was thinking.
He said, that in order to really help our Mexican brothers and sisters that we would have to find a way to build domes faster and less expensive. From that, the Monolithic EcoShell was invented. Over the last 12 years David and his crew have worked to perfect the EcoShell and David has pushed to help people in other nations.
As President of Domes for the World, my Father's love of Mexico has not been lost on me. We were able this year to complete a major charitable project including 80 EcoShells in Indonesia. This was a chance for us to prove our concept would work, and that goal was accomplished.
The village is beautiful and the people are thrilled with their new homes. We are very excited to bring this technology here, and to help the people of the Colonias. We are looking forward to working with you, the City of Piedras Negras, in achieving the goals we have in common.
